TUESDAY 30TH DECEMBER 2008
I have just got computer and internet access back so am going to write a long overdue update on things since the end of term.
ONLINE PORTFOLIO:
This project has been such a big challenge for me. The main problem I have had is how to brand myself. I didn't want to use my name, mainly because I don't like how it sounds. I thought about using Victoria Martin on its own, but I never call myself that so it seemed silly to. After much thought and deliberation I came up with Berri Design. My thought process behind this started with fruit as a name, and then ended up as Berry being a nice word on its own but then from a design point of view, I much preferred how 'Berri' looked as opposed to 'Berry' when placed next to the word 'design'. This wasn't a factor in my thought process at all, but 'Berry' is the name of my friends daughter, so it also has meaning to me.
berri design - i think it looks nice and sounds nice
We had a crit at the end of term with Neil. I had some example layouts of how I wanted my website to look and be navigated. Neil suggested that a white background might be a bit boring and that maybe I could look at textures, such as hand made paper. I think this is a nice idea, but after further consideration, I really like white backgrounds on website, they don't take away from the images. I also think that it is more suited to an illustrators website maybe? I will look into it and see what I can find, but I really am keen on a plain white background - it fits with me as a designer and my style. I am also a bit of a control freak and a textured background would probably make me anxious, I like structure and organisation, so I feel that I need a site that shows this.
After further thinking, I have gone back to the idea of branding myself as 'victoria martin'. My website will be a certain colour scheme and layout and these have been chosen on the type of designer I am and the things I like, the name isn't going to have an effect on they way my site looks etc. So, I think it can be easily changed if need be.
ISTD
I went into Bournemouth to do my people watching for the ISTD brief. It was really hard to get down enough information about a person in just three minutes, whilst having to observe the person and write at the same time. Due to the places I was doing the people watching, a dictaphone wasn't an option. Still, I managed to get lots of information down, and at first glance, I really can't see how I am going to use it? Or whether it will be an interesting and effective piece of design? I have left it for now, and will revisit my notes tomorrow to see whether anything jumps out at me. I started to think about changing my idea ... again! But I think that I should continue with this if I can otherwise I am going to make more work for myself and my course projects will suffer (online portfolio)!
INK BAR
The Ink Bar is up and running and every time I have past it, it seems to be busy ... great stuff! We met up with Chloe before Christmas to get some printed media for our portfolios - we are going to see if we can get hold of some menus etc as well. They gave us a £20 voucher each for The Print Rooms which we spent before we broke up for Christmas holidays.
The website is up and running, please click here to view it. As we did the logo and the identity (ink in water), due to time constraints the website was built by their web design company - although it is a shame to see they have squished the logo up on the home page.
So, there is my update so far. I am working on my online portfolio still and will update again soon!
THURSDAY 27TH NOVEMBER 2008
We were given our new brief today for Screen Based Communication 2! I am really excited by the project, if not a little worried! I think that once I get into it I will be fine - but we are back to a blank canvas again and this is always quite daunting ... but as always ... plenty of research and ideas generation techniques usually gets me through and heading towards an idea!
There are so many things I need to consider for this brief including:
- What am I going to call myself?! I am definately not calling myself Vicky Martin, or Vicky Martin Design or basically anything with my name in it as I don't like how it sounds, or looks on the page! I was born Victoria Martin - but I don't like that either, I never call myself that, so it doesn't seem right to use it as an identity. So this leaves me with coming up with a name and forming a company identity that I can register. I have been thinking about this so much lately, but just can't seem to come up with anything that I really like! I am hoping something will come up soon though!
- I also need to think about the sort of designer I am - this is a difficult thing for me to do as I have always felt quite lost as to where my niche is. I feel I have strengths in type setting, layouts, design for print - I need to show the type of designer I am through my website. There are so many things I like and am interested in, but this website is about me and what I do and what my strengths are!
So, on with the research and ideas generation!
I am planning on spending Friday on this project. I can then come in on Monday and Tuesday and spend those days working on the ISTD brief ready for when Mike Ryan comes in on Friday.
