Screen Based Communication Part Deux - Online Portfolio

We were given our new brief today for Screen Based Communication 2! I am really excited by the project, if not a little worried! I think that once I get into it I will be fine - but we are back to a blank canvas again and this is always quite daunting ... but as always ... plenty of research and ideas generation techniques usually gets me through and heading towards an idea!
There are so many things I need to consider for this brief including:
- What am I going to call myself?! I am definately not calling myself Vicky Martin, or Vicky Martin Design or basically anything with my name in it as I don't like how it sounds, or looks on the page! I was born Victoria Martin - but I don't like that either, I never call myself that, so it doesn't seem right to use it as an identity. So this leaves me with coming up with a name and forming a company identity that I can register. I have been thinking about this so much lately, but just can't seem to come up with anything that I really like! I am hoping something will come up soon though!
- I also need to think about the sort of designer I am - this is a difficult thing for me to do as I have always felt quite lost as to where my niche is. I feel I have strengths in type setting, layouts, design for print - I need to show the type of designer I am through my website. There are so many things I like and am interested in, but this website is about me and what I do and what my strengths are!
So, on with the research and ideas generation!
I am planning on spending Friday on this project. I can then come in on Monday and Tuesday and spend those days working on the ISTD brief ready for when Mike Ryan comes in on Friday.

Hemingway Design
Today I attended the Wayne Hemingway Lecture. He came to the AIB to do a talk and I managed to get one of the tickets. It was very interesting, and VERY inspiring. I am thinking about setting up my own business in the future. This is an area I have experience in and feel confident enough to do, and to listen to someone as successful as Wayne talk about working his way up was so valuable.

ISTD Competition Briefs

I have decided to go with the 'Three Minutes' brief. I think it has a lot of scope and could be interesting. My aim this week is to get an idea sorted and plenty of research done ready for next week.

Look Again, Think Again Evaluation
TUESDAY 25TH NOVEMBER 2008
After the final crit with Sally, my feedback was to:
- remove my name and personal details from the bottom left corner - the poster itself is very personal and doesn't really need to include that information, as really, its not relevant
- also consider adding emotions that I felt during each event
I took these comments on board and re-designed my poster. I think it definately works much better like this, without my details and with the emotions added.
I had a problem with the text that was in the colour Cyan as it wasn't very readable against black. I changed this to green as it is in keeping with the design, but is more readable.
I am happy with the poster. I decided not to add a photo or anything as I wanted it to look like an info graphic and I think that adding other media wouldn't work due to the style of the poster - very structured and organised.
I found this part of the unit quite a struggle to be honest. I came up with the idea, but didn't have time to execute it in the way I had hoped to. But I feel the final poster works well.

Work Placement Email_Violette Editions
MONDAY 21ST NOVEMBER 2008
I have just sent an email to Violette Editions. They are an Art Publishers and they published Sophie Calle:Double Game by Paul Auster. Their website only has their contact details on, so I have emailed them asking whether they are able to send me any further information on the books they have published, and also asked whether they take work placement students. If so, this is something I would definately apply for!! I will wait to hear back!

Packaging Evaluation
MONDAY 24TH NOVEMBER 2008
I found the packaging brief really hard to get into and really struggled to grasp the what the brief wanted us to do. After a few chats with Neil and Clare I felt a lot more confident and understood more clearly what we needed to do. Design FOR Packaging. As always, once I started researching I really got into the project - I find that the more research I do, the more confident I am about my ideas and the less I worry! I have produced 2 final boxes - one for Surfers and one for Snowboarders. I am pleased with how they have turned out. I really like the fact that the box is completely black on the outside with only the Animal Logo on it, and then when you open it, the typographic facts are revealed. I can visualise how the boxes would look if they were actually printed on the recycled cardboard I have in mind and I think they would work really well. There is a lot of recycled cardboard objects around - Paperchase do a large range of diaries, notebooks and photo albums that are made of recycled materials - but still look really really nice. I definitely found this brief challenging, but towards the end I really got into it. I think it is sometimes just a case of when you come to a dead end, just keeping working and researching and eventually you will find a way out - in my case anyway!

Getting Into Publishing_Penguin

Yesterday was also the Getting Into Publishing day at Penguin. It was an early start for me ... 6am! I got the train from Alton and arrived in London with plenty of time to grab a coffee! After a slight bit of confusion at the start whereby a few of us weren't on their list of attendees - they finally let us in to the talk.
Here is the plan of the day...
The manager from each department gave a ten to fifteen minute talk about their role, the work of their department and what part they play in the Penguin business.
It seems like a really good company to work for. Quite a few of the people that spoke had been there a long time, and had come into the company into a position such as Secretary, and then worked their way up and became Managers/Directors of each their department.
The talk covered everything from the Contracts and Rights department, to Production, PR, HR and even Finance. It was very much a talk on getting into publishing, however more for people who want to work for Penguin specifically and are interested in working for them as a company. I know that I have an interest in Book Design and Publishing. However, thinking about it now, I think I to focus more on Art Book Publishing, or Limited Edition Publishing - books that are really interestingly made and designed. For example Paul Austers 'Sophie Calle:Double Game'. It is beautifully made. I bought it last year, and they are now quite collectable books. Each page is really nice and at the front it has a section of another book. This is printed on different stock paper that is smaller than that of the book, and it is bound with a ribbon. Phaidon Press are world renowned for their high quality design and production. I found a brief history about them on their website...
I am going to look into getting work experience at a publishers that is relevant to the type of publishing I am interested in. I think this is the next step for me to try and work out what I want to do after this course. I think all experience, good or bad, is really beneficial. Even the Penguin day, it made me consider what type of books I wanted work with.

Phaidon has a long and distinguished history as an art book publisher. The company was founded in Vienna in 1923 by Dr. Bela Horowiz and Ludwig Goldscheider and named after “Phaedo”, Socrates’ pupil who spoke on the immortality of the soul. Their key objective was to deliver quality books at affordable prices. They were able to achieve this as pioneers of the international co-edition and with large print-runs. Their first titles were not art books, but books on literature, philosophy and history. Ink Bar Launch Party!

Last night was the Ink Bar Launch Party! We arrived at about 6 o'clock to a very busy and amazing looking Ink Bar! It was great to see our logo and branding in the form of window graphics, menus, flyers and loyalty cards! It was such a good evening, much of it spent drinking champagne :o) but we also got to meet and speak to so many people from different businesses, investors and people who work for or with Andy Price. I am really interested in business as well so this was a bonus for me, I found it really interesting!
I really enjoyed the evening and the bar was busy all night too which was great! We had a few pictures taken for the local newspaper and DV8 magazine, and also spoke to a lady from their PR company. We are meeting with Chloe soon to get copies of everything for our portfolios!

Dan Hodson showed me this site today - we were talking about going on a photography trip to take some photos. I love run down and derelict buildings - they have an eery feel to them. I find them so intriguing because you can't help but try to work out what happened there - or imagine what was there before. This site has so many pictures, broken down into groups such as 'Asylums and Hospitals' etc.

I haven't updated my blog for a while, so here is a long overdue update!
INK BAR
We have had an email from Chloe telling us we are on the VIP guest list for the launch party which is on Thursday! There is going to be a photographer there to take photos of us next to the branding!
Megs and I still haven't heard anything back about my cover letter or her flyers - I know they have been really busy with the launch, so maybe they decided to leave these for now. In Chloe's email she did say she would sit down and reply to our emails tomorrow when she had some spare time ... but for now we will just look forward to the party :o)
PENGUIN Getting Into Publishing Day
I applied for this a got invited to attend! It is this Thursday ... I need to be there at 9.30 and it goes on until about 1.30 - 2pm - so as soon as its finished I need to get back to Bournemouth in time for the Launch Party for the Ink Bar! Its going to be a busy day but I am sure it will be well worth it!
PACKAGING BRIEF
This has gone really well considering how behind we all thought we were after doing the Ink Bar Brief. I have managed to get loads of research done and get a solid idea together with enough time to work through it and produce mock ups and preliminary designs in time for the Final Crit - I really wanted to have something ready so that I could get something out of the crit, such as suggestions for improvements etc. Sally has said that the group that worked on the Ink Bar can have an extension on the hand in date - but ideally I want to keep working and get everything finished as early as possible. We don't get briefed on the next project until next Thursday, so that gives me some time to catch up on last minute bits that need doing.

I am still really not sure what I am doing about this. Megs and I are having a meeting with Sally this afternoon to try and get a better understanding of what is expected/required. I think, especially due to the talk we had last year about it, we are a little bit daunted - but Sally said there is no need to be - so we just really need to work out what we are doing and start researching! Today it was really nice to have the day free to spend on the packaging brief - I think all of us that are working on the Ink Rooms Re-brand have felt as if we are really behind due to spending so much time on that, but, after the crit this morning it doesn't seem that is the case, as much as we thought anyway!
I spent today getting my box design finalised and researching into what I am going to have as my design for it.
I am working on design sheets this time - which I did for Typeradio last year - it might sound wierd, but I really struggle with it, I much prefer working in my sketch book. But I have started now so will carry on. I think its because I like to be organised, sometimes too much! Working in a sketchbook guarantees everything is in order - sounds sad I know - but hey! It is good practice for the real world anyway. Perhaps next time I can do my preliminary research and sketches etc in my sketchbook, and then have design sheets towards the end.
I think I am getting there with this brief - I have found lots of sites that have surf facts and info that I can use. I am just trying to decide at the moment how the watch is going to be inside the box - wrapped round a cushion? plastic stand? cardboard stand?
I really really need to look at the ISTD briefs too! I still haven't and am panicking about that! LOTS! Ink Bar Meeting
THURSDAY 6TH NOVEMBER 2008
This morning me, James, Meg, Luke and George had a meeting with Chloe and James (their graphic designer). We spent the morning working on how we are going to take things forward. It was basically to make sure that we, and James are on the same page as far as the look and feel of everything goes, fonts, colours etc.
It went really well I think, we shared our ideas and decided who was going to do what. We are now splitting the work load with James which is quite good as we are also very busy with our uni work. The Ink Rooms re-brand is such a great opportunity for us, so its nice that we are working well with Chloe and her team!
It was decided that Luke and George would continue to work on the website. Meg, James and I are doing the invitations for the launch party (20th November) and the Christmas Fliers.
After the meeting Chloe stayed with us while we worked on the invitations. She had some text amends and some other adjustments to be made. Meg, James and I each mocked up some invitation designs based on the ink in water, James's logo and the font choices.
Chloe decided that the reverse of the invitation would be the one I designed. I am happy with it and enjoy type setting so am pleased she liked how it looked. We then each gave her PDF's of the fronts of the invitations we had done for her to take away and show her boss and their Graphic Designer.
She wants to get them printed this evening - so we should hear back later this afternoon!
It was quite pressured trying to get everything done quickly, but I like working under pressure. It was also really good that Chloe was there to give us feedback as we went along as we were able to get some really uptogether designs done.

It was basically to make sure that we, and James are on the same page as far as the look and feel of everything goes, fonts, colours etc.
It went really well I think, we shared our ideas and decided who was going to do what. We are now splitting the work load with James which is quite good as we are also very busy with our uni work. The Ink Rooms re-brand is such a great opportunity for us, so its nice that we are working well with Chloe and her team!
It was decided that Luke and George would continue to work on the website. Meg, James and I are doing the invitations for the launch party (20th November) and the Christmas Fliers.
After the meeting Chloe stayed with us while we worked on the invitations. She had some text amends and some other adjustments to be made. Meg, James and I each mocked up some invitation designs based on the ink in water, James's logo and the font choices.
Chloe decided that the reverse of the invitation would be the one I designed. I am happy with it and enjoy type setting so am pleased she liked how it looked. We then each gave her PDF's of the fronts of the invitations we had done for her to take away and show her boss and their Graphic Designer.
She wants to get them printed this evening - so we should hear back later this afternoon!
It was quite pressured trying to get everything done quickly, but I like working under pressure. It was also really good that Chloe was there to give us feedback as we went along as we were able to get some really uptogether designs done.

George and Meg told me today that Snowpatrol have used tea bag folding for the cover of their new album that was released last week - its cool to see that its being used for something modern and current :o)

I have lots of links on my blog to other blogs and websites that are of interest to me, and every now and then I check them out and see whats new. Sabrina Ward Harrison's website is lovely and her work is beautiful! Everything to the hand rendered type throughout, and the music she has chosen to have playing as people look through her work - its sets it off perfectly!
Her photography is amazing. She also does a lot of hand rendered type - ink and quill pens.

Book Works ...

I have just been looking at some blogs on the internet and had a quick look on the Book Works site. This is where we were going to visit when we did our work placement at The Gate. They managed to get us a 20 minute slot to visit them and see them working and making books. But unfortunately something happened at The Gate with a client so they couldn't take us :o( such a shame! I would love to go one day.

Invitations
WEDNESDAY 5TH NOVEMBER 2008
Apart from being a little bit gutted I have hardly seen any fireworks tonight, I am feeling a little bit better about my work!
I had to work today but I came into uni at 6ish for a couple of hours to try and get some packaging work done! I really feel like I have no idea what I am doing at the moment - I can't think and am struggling to come up with ideas - I keep looking at design blogs, reading things, looking at Graphik etc to try and give myself some inspiration, but I think where things have been so hectic, my mind can't just think! I am rushing everything! I love going to work on Wednesdays as its something different, but sometimes it stresses me out even more, as its not a creative job by any means and so my mind drifts away from uni and then I have to get back into the swing of things - I am sure things will fall into place soon ... touch wood!

We had the meeting with Chloe, lots of things were discussed and there is so much to do, its exciting, but slightly worrying at the same time as we have so much coursework to do:

But, back to the meeting - they chose one of the logos from our presentation - one of the ones James did! Good work! Here it is:

The invitations are the most important thing that need doing - they want to go with the ink in water theme for all the promotional material apart from the menus - their graphic designer is going to do these at some point.
We are going to come in tomorrow and work on the invitations - Chloe is having a meeting Wednesday so we need to get something over to her ASAP. We don't have any set colours yet really, and we are also awaiting the copy for the invitations.

PAL session - Time Management
MONDAY 3RD OCTOBER 2008
This mornings PAL session went okay I think - we decided before hand that we would do Time Management with them - they hadn't said there was anything in particular they wanted to cover this week, and Kit suggested Time Management would be the most relevant - at least to get them to make a realistic list of everything they have to do before the hand in which for them is a couple of weeks!
At the start we asked them if they would like to do this, or instead do an 'Inspiration' session - where they all share any inspiration they have found lately with the group - but they wanted to do the time management exercise. I think with their hand in coming up they want to make good use of the hour while they can.
They worked really well and as usual we all entered into discussion about lessons and work. I find this is really good, because even the quieter people end up joining in and after a few minutes people seem confident enough to share any concerns they have.
Next week is the last PAL session before their hand in, so they have asked if we can do a mini-crit! I think this will be really good for them, as they are already getting along really well within the PAL group, so hopefully they will have the confidence to crit each others work.
I found it really hard in my first year to crit peoples work. Its hard because you feel you are being negative, but in actual fact, its constructive criticism, which is important. I think doing a mini crit in their PAL group will be good for them. When we did the RBL brief - that was the first time people really started to get involved and be critical of peoples work - positively and negatively - and that's why all the work that was produced was so strong - it helps you consider you work from different angles.
I think we are going to try and give the crit a bit of an edge to get people motivated - we will decide that in the week I think.

Meg just called me to say that Chloe has just spoken to James and after the meeting with her boss they have decided to go with our ideas. She is picking them up shortly and they are coming into uni (i am already here!) to go through all the ideas etc! EXCITING!!

Ink Rooms - New direction!

I got to uni today and the guys gave me an update as they heard from Chloe over the weekend!
She emailed them saying that the only domain name they could get was barINK. So they would be going with that. But then she contacting James again to say they were going with InkDot.
They sent over some more logos to her to show her boss based on the name change.
We are still waiting to hear - she was having the meeting this morning so we should know soon. James Ramsay submitted his ninety.five identity too so it seems it might be between the two.

As mentioned before, we sent over a PDF (6 pages) of logos we had come up with. We literally had to do as many as we could as we were so pushed for time and really had no idea what they wanted to take forward. The idea being that she can pick the ones she likes/aspects of the ones she likes and we can progress them further. We have no definate name for the bar at the moment - they still need to ensure they can get round the legalities and also secure domain names etc.
THIS ONE IS MY PAGE OF LOGOS:

- move the black dot with 'dot' written in it to in between the word INK and BAR - we weren't very keen on this, but she is really keen on using the dot with 'dot' written in it, so we will have to push that now
